Sail2Ski Alaska!
Captain Ben has continued his quest to point boats into fjords in search of backcountry skiing in remote locals. This time the journey took him and his crew to Baranof Island in Southeast Alaska, where he captained the 60ft converted ocean racer, DOGBARK, on an adventure that will not soon be forgotten.
Ten days of wild and remote fjords, towering mountains, incredible wildlife (well over 100 humpback whales!), and more bushwhacking through thickets of Alder and Devil’s club, river crossings and sheer cliff climbing than anyone ought to sign up for in the name of fun. But fun it was!
Joined by much of the same crew as last year’s British Columbia trip, and with a few stellar add-ons, the team adventured big, laughed hard and experienced one wild and inspired expedition. They completed a circumnavigation of the island and put in some turns where likely no one has skied before.
We want to put out a huge thank you to Graeme Esarey, owner of the good ship DOGBARK, for trusting us with his wonderfully capable vessel. And for catching us so much fresh fish.
