THE GOOD SHIP TRUE GETS SOME UPGRADES!
Our trusty steed, TRUE, continues to be such a wonderful vessel for what we do. Launched in 1965 she is an absolute classic – unique in design, hefty in build and an absolute joy to sail. So, as long as she remains in our care, we will be putting every effort and dollar we can spare into keeping her so. As you may recall, two years ago she received a brand new diesel engine. This is perhaps the most important piece of equipment, though it may be surprising on a sailboat. When it comes to safety, maneuverability and traveling long distances in waters that are riddled with narrow passages and strong tidal currents, we are so happy to have a beautiful, reliable and much cleaner (i.e. environmentally friendly) engine.
Next in the line up of things that MUST be functional and strong is the standing rigging (the wires that hold the masts up). This winter, we took that project on and TRUE now stands proud with an entirely new rig. From the chainplates up, it’s all new and could last another 56 years (though we’ll probably do this every 15 years or so). It was a huge undertaking, but she is likely more sound and sea-worthy than the day she was launched. With improvements to the technology, we made a few changes, added a few things and threw in a couple new sails for good measure. We’re thrilled and she’s been sailing brilliantly.
Lastly (is there ever a lastly with boat projects??…the answer is no…but…), we are installing Rapter Deck non-skid padding on the decks which will make for a very comfortable and safe decking solution. Soft on bare feet and bums, very anti-slippy, and pretty darn good looking. So, TRUE is feeling fancy in all her new jewelry and dress.
